Too many students leave our K-16 schools numerically illiterate and wanting little to do with mathematics. This session focused on how the Standards for Mathematical Practice can be employed and developed as students learn to reason with and about number. We examined how daily practice with mental arithmetic can develop productive habits of mind, and enhance students' understanding of the arithmetic properties and place value while building a more solid foundation for geometric and algebraic reasoning.
